We have yet to have serious incident with regards to safety and security at the Annex. Please observe these simple guidelines and use common sense!
Annex Security Guidlelines
- Put passports, ID, return tickets, valuables in the kitchen safe as soon as you arrive. Contact HWB for the safe combination.
Do not leave anything of value in the courtyard, truck beds or even in locked vans at night. Lock the kitchen, tool shed and close the door to Casa Blanca at night.Check the rolling iron gate to make sure that the tracking pin on the upper right corner (as you look from inside) on the non-locked end is in its track and not easily pushed out of its track allowing people to squeeze through that end. If it is too low push it back in under the slot and hammer the iron tracking pin up more vertically into the slot. Lock the gate and ALL doors, including the tool shed, every time the majority of the group is away from the orphanage and activity is low. You may want to consider taking turns having someone stay back when the rest of the team is at the site.It is unwise to be outside of the compound after dark. It is best to be in groups of three when outside the compound during the day.
Safety Tips
- Most trips are without medical incident, however there have been occasional sprained ankles, sunsickness, and cuts requiring stitches. We strongly encourage groups to include medical personnel such as a nurse, doctor or paramedic on their team. Each group should be prepared with an emergency plan and directions to San Diego hospitals.
Safe practice is to refrain from eating foods not prepared at the Annex for your group. Exceptions are packaged foods sold in the store, and baked goods sold at the bakery (although best to stay away from creme-filled pastries).2-Way Radios add greatly to safety allowing quicker response times. They also facilitate loading and unloading at the airport, caravaning with multiple of vehicles and site coordination. We find that 4 watt (or greater) radios work best.Every site should have a first aid kit, enough water for each person, a vehicle nearby and a 2-way radio.Every person should have a water bottle and sunscreen of at least 30 SPF.
